Providing healthy meals to families in need
Families in Handworth, Birmingham, have been able to access healthy, nutritious meals during the school holidays thanks to support from Food Works and Great Places.
One of the initiatives we support is Food Works’ free holiday meal programme, which provides two hot meals a day for school-age children during the holidays. Using surplus supermarket food and produce grown on the Food Works farm, the team prepares healthy, balanced meals known as “JustMeals”.
The programme helps families make their budgets go further during the school holidays, while also reducing food waste. Between April 2025 and May 2026, 1,037 of the 2,331 free meals provided were delivered to Handsworth residents.
Senior Hub Manager Jamie Lamb said the support helps reduce worries about food costs and gives families access to healthy meals when they need them most.
