Growing a legacy in Blackburn
A group of Blackburn customers have been getting stuck into gardening, thanks to a community project.
Thanks to Community Partnership Manager Aateeka Bashir, Great Places helped to secure £9,000 in lottery funding which was used to buy a greenhouse, planters, plants, tools and more to bring the garden at Bowland House to life.
The greenhouse was set up behind the building and customers including Julie Redhead-Cook, Karen Williams, Dee Connell and Jackie Impey, have been busy growing herbs and vegetables. They’ve also added colourful planters around the building to brighten things up, with support from Neighbourhood Services Manager Anthony Chantler, Caretaker Scott Holt and Aateeka.
The project got a bit of extra help from another Great Places customer from Thornton-Cleveleys, Jeff Darwell. The Bowland group visited Jeff’s garden to learn more, and Jeff later came to Blackburn to lend a hand.
Customers say the project has made a huge difference, turning the grounds into a vibrant space. It has had a positive impact on customers’ mental health, providing them with healthy home-grown produce and has helped create a sense of community and wellbeing.
