Welcome from Alison

As we move into the warmer months, I’m really pleased to share the latest edition of My Great Place with you.
Inside, you’ll find stories from across Great Places, alongside updates, advice and the support that’s available to you. From help with money matters and staying fire safe, to improvements we’re making to services like repairs, neighbourhoods and communication, we hope there’s something useful for everyone.
This edition also highlights the fantastic work happening in communities, with customers starting new businesses and local projects helping people feel more connected and supported. These stories highlight the work taking place across our homes and neighbourhoods, and the difference it’s making for customers.
Thank you for taking the time to read the magazine and for continuing to share your views. I hope you enjoy this edition.
Take care,
Alison Dean Chief Executive Officer
How we helped Lara turn her pastry passion into a business
When Lara first contacted our Employability Service, she never imagined it would lead to her starting her own business. Living in Salford, she was balancing a part-time cleaning job with caring for her family.
“I came to the UK 14 years ago for my children,” Lara said. “I wanted them to have better opportunities.”
Her journey began with a simple text message inviting her to a digital skills session. Later, another message about the Boss It self-employment course helped reignite her dream of running a business. Gill, Employability Coach Team Leader, saw Lara’s passion and supported her with developing her ideas, planning next steps and creating a business plan.
Following the course, ill health briefly slowed Lara’s progress, but we continued to support her until she was ready. After help to access funding for equipment, she soon launched The Bee and The Crow, selling Portuguese pastries inspired by her hometown of Lisbon.
