Fire safety reminder

Your safety is our top priority, and that’s why we have rigorous fire safety procedures in place for all the buildings we own and manage.

What if there’s a fire in my housing block?

If your block operates a Stay Put/Stay Safe policy and you discover a fire in a flat or common area, make sure to:

  • Alert all occupants of your flat
  • Leave the building by the nearest exit and don’t use the lift!
  • Call 999 and ask for the Fire and Rescue Service, giving your full address, including your town, which part of the building the fire is in, and whether anyone is trapped.

Other occupants not directly affected by the fire should stay put in their flat – unless directed to leave by the Fire Brigade. Then, they should not return until instructed to do so.

I live in a single dwelling/my block of flats has an immediate evacuation policy – what should I do differently?

Sound the alarm if you discover the fire, and call 999, asking for the Fire Brigade. Everyone must leave the building by the nearest exit and not return until the Fire Brigade give the go ahead.

Remember!

Make sure everyone in your household is familiar with the escape route and assembly point. Please refer to your Fire Action Notice so that you are aware of the evacuation policy and where to find the alarms. These are located in communal areas and are mailed to you annually.

  • Don’t delay to save valuables or pets, or to investigate the fire.
  • Don’t tamper with smoke alarms – Great Places is responsible for these.
  • Try to crawl on the floor if there is smoke, as the air is cleanest near the floor.
  • Only open the doors you need to and close any you can to slow the spread – but feel them with the back of your hand – if they are warm, leave them as the fire is on the other side.

With the weather getting sunnier, many of you will be wanting to enjoy a summer barbecue – please take care with these and remember these are not to be used on balconies in our properties.
