Hello and welcome to the winter edition of My Great Place.

The last year has been a time like no other. Without doubt, the pandemic has changed society and affected the lives of many of our customers and colleagues.

Through these difficult times and despite facing their own challenges, our colleagues have worked hard to meet our customers’ needs and deliver important services (even when our offices were closed), and I’m very proud of all their hard work.

During this time, we also brought Equity Housing Group into the Great Places’ family to create a much bigger and stronger organisation. This will help us to deliver even better services for our customers and build more affordable homes. Over recent months we have been working hard in the background to integrate both organisations. The pandemic however has slowed us down and some of our plans were re-programmed whilst we focused on the immediate need of our customers and maintaining much needed services.

Throughout this period we experienced a very challenging few months, coping with a reduced workforce due to high colleague absences due to Coronavirus or through isolation, along with managing a backlog of over 1600 repairs that were in our system throughout the lockdown periods. Naturally, we also experienced difficulty from time to time in accessing customers’ homes to do repairs too. Our partner organisations and contractors also experienced their own issues due to the pandemic, in particular their supply chain and ability to locate parts, which then impacted on our ability to resolve some issues customers may have experienced. It is fair to say this has been the most challenging time I have experienced in my career. As we now move to a more normal way of life, we are focused on managing and maintaining our homes and delivering services to the standards that both you and I expect, as I understand that you all have been impacted heavily throughout this difficult time. It’s in this context that I am really proud to say we have spent £7m investing in improving customer homes, with improvement works continuing at a pace.

As lockdown lifted over the summer, I did get the opportunity to get out with colleagues to meet customers and hear first-hand what it felt like to be a Great Places customer. I also visited some of the community organisations which provided life-changing support and services to our customers affected by the pandemic, and was humbled by their stories.

As we approach the end of the year, we are now working really hard in the background to continue our integration of Equity and Great Places and whilst there may appear to be little that’s changed, in the coming months you will start to see more of the work we have been doing behind the scenes to create a better organisation that delivers better services for customers.

Next year will see realisation of a major milestone - one new website with one new customer portal to enable you to access information and services directly and one way of delivering services all supported with a new housing management system, Aareon – you can find out more about these exciting new developments later in the magazine.

There’s also information about how you can deal with mould, damp and condensation, which can become an issue as the cold weather sets in and also find out how we can help if you’re struggling with your finances, energy bills or food.

Thanks for reading.
